Do you Have Rats or Mice?
If you think that you have a problem with Rats or Mice in your home or business, but how can you tell?
Look for droppings under Kitchen units if that is where you are hearing the noise.
Certain signs can also point to the size of the rodent population. When rodents are seen or heard at night but never during the day, the population is in the early stages and can be controlled by bait & Traps. If you are seeing or hearing any rodents during the day, numerous fresh droppings or new gnaw marks, it is likely that the population has gotten relatively large and may need professional pest control services.
Look for these signs that will help you determine whether you have a current or previous rodent infestation in your home or business.
If you find Rodent Droppings
Fresh Rat droppings are dark and moist & the size of a current if it is a Rat & up to the size of an apple seed if it is a mouse. When droppings age, they dry out and become old and grey & brown and will easily crumble when touched.
Droppings are most likely to be found in loft spaces, in drawers or cupboards, under sinks, under bath panels, & along rodent runways. You will find the highest number of droppings where the rodents are nesting or feeding, so inspect the area around the new-found droppings to define if there is still an active (or new) infestation.
Have you found Gnaw Marks?
In difference to the droppings, fresher gnaw marks are lighter in color & become darker as they age. These will often be found on food packaging or the structure of the house itself such as loft beams. The way to determine age is to liken a gnaw mark you just detected with those on a similar material that you know are older.
If the newly found marks are lighter in color, it could be an indication of a continuing infestation. The marks can also indicate whether you have rats or mice; larger gnaw marks will have been produced by the larger teeth of rats. Thus if you had a mouse infestation, but are now seeing larger gnaw marks, you may now have rats.
Can you smell a Foul Odour?
Cats and dogs can become active and excited in areas where rodents are present. This is a result of the odour of the rodents and is most likely to occur when rodents have recently into the house area such as under a kitchen sink area.
If you see your Cat or Dog is attracted to an area in area in the house which it had previously had no interest, get a flashlight and examine the area for Rats or Mice. If an infestation is large, you can detect an ongoing stale smell coming from hidden areas, indicating an active infestation.
If you can see Tracks and Runways
If rodents are currently active in or around your home, their runways and tracks are likely to be distinctive, becoming fainter as time passes. Tracks or runways are most simply detected with a Torch or backlight held at an angle toward the suspected area such as loft spaces or under sink units to see if you can see footprints, urine stains, or droppings.
If you suspect an area is being frequented by rodents, try placing a very thin layer of flour near the activity area. If rodents are active, you are likely to see their trails in the powder.
Noises in the Loft and Wall Cavity’s
Rats in the loft are often related to faulty drains, rats crawl up the pipework in the outside inspection chambers and up the cavity wall. Drains can often develop faults or breakages over time. If there are no visible holes in your external brickwork and you do not have a low roof line your activity is most likely coming from the outside chamber.
A Rat requires water on a daily basis and cannot survive in a loft space without this whereas a Mouse can absorb water though its food. We have specialist knowledge on Rodent cases that keep reoccurring that are linked to drain issues. AS Pest Control Solutions should be called if you have new or reoccurring rodent issues.
You Find Nests
Rodents will use materials such as tattered paper, fabric, loft insulation, cavity wall fabrics or dried plant matter to make their nests. If these areas are found and have any of the other signs of current presence fresh droppings, gnawing, odour, or tracks it there is still an infestation in your home.
Signs of Rodents in Your Garden Area
Rodents are attracted to Bird Food, Ponds, Bird Baths, piles of trash, Composters, organic waste, etc. for both food and nesting. If these are present near the home or structure, inspect them for signs of rodents. Look out for tracks on the lawn, holes, and tunnels in the garden area If there is no indication of rodents.
Keep your garden tidy, feed birds responsibly, eliminate rubbish, fix water leaks these will provide a water source for Rats. Ensure your house structure is well maintained cement up any holes in brickwork. Make sure all drain covers are kept on.
